When exploring Caribbean Islands, one of many interesting facets of the culture are the different languages of the Caribbean Islands which are spoken. After you listen to English spoken there, it’s not American or of Great Britain dialects, but it has a unique accent that is definitely extremely charming to listen to. It definitely illustrates the diversity of the cultural background, and a history of the Caribbean that is intriguing and complex.
You will find four official languages voiced within the Caribbean. However in addition there are a number of creoles and local patois (hybrid languages). A large number of the Creole languages of the Caribbean Islands are typically used for inter-ethnic communication. When looking at the different languages of the Caribbean, the four main languages are:
Spanish (the earliest European language introduced and covers West and Central Caribbean)
Dutch (on those islands of the Wonderland Antilles)
English (North, Central and East)
French (Central and East)
In addition, there are several additional lesser native languages. Some of the local languages have grown extinct or are dying out.
Within the Caribbean, the official language is generally determined by which ever colonial power (England, Spain, France, or the Netherlands) held sway on the island originally or longest. English would be the first or second language in many Caribbean islands in addition to being the unofficial “language of tourism”. It’s the state language of Anguilla, Antigua, the Bahamas, Barbados the British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, St. Croix, St. John St. Kitts, and St. Thomas.
Spanish is the language voiced by the majority of individuals, as it is the state language of the two largest islands, Cuba and the Dominican Republic, as well as sharing English as the official language of Puerto Rico and Trinidad/Tobago.
French is spoken in Haiti, Martinique, and Guadeloupe, and St. Martin.
Dutch is the official language of Curacao, St Maarten, and two very small islands.
People who speak different languages of the Caribbean Islands dialects, which might be called Patois or Creole, speak a language that consists of an amalgamation between European English, Spanish, French, Dutch and African languages. That said, tourists end up finding themselves richly rewarded after they hear a ‘native language’ voiced, often a Creole is used as the domestic language.
Right after obtaining independence, several Caribbean countries, in searching for national unity, decided on one language (usually the former colonial language) to be used in government and education. Recently, Caribbean countries have become more and more mindful of the significance of linguistic diversity. Language policies that are becoming developed today are pretty much targeted at multilingualism.

Getting everything done before heading off on a holiday can be difficult, but making sure your pre-travel list is completed will give you great peace of mind while on every single trip. Travel insurance, vaccinations, visas, and scanning documents can pile up on your ‘to-do’ post it notes, but all the little tasks done can really save you a lot of trouble while out on your adventures. This is especially true if you’re travelling outside of Europe or to places with special visa requirements.
This article has a six-item to-do list already set up for you to tick off. From booking your single trip travel insurance to checking your debit cards, you’ll find some helpful suggestions of things to get done before you get on the plane.
1. See your doctor
If you’re travelling outside of Europe, you might need to get vaccinations before you go, and in some cases, before you can even apply for a visa. It’s also not a bad idea to refill any prescription medication to last you through the duration of your travels.
2. Learn as much about your destination as possible
If you’re travelling to a place you know very little about, it’s a really good idea to read about the local customs and history before you leave. This will give context to many of the sites you’re seeing, and will provide insight into appropriate behaviours and attire.
3. Check in with your bank
Before you travel, check the expiry dates on your cards to make sure that they’ll last through the duration of your trip. It’s also not a bad idea to call your bank to let them know which countries you’ll be visiting, so no red flags go up which might led them to put a stop on your card when you need it.
4. Book Single Trip Travel Insurance
When travelling abroad, it’s a good idea to make sure you have single trip travel insurance to cover you in case of injury or loss of property. These policies are usually easy find and you can usually complete application forms online and just print out your proof of policy. Many countries require you to have cover before you can apply for a visa.
5. Scan your documents
Make a copy of your passport, insurance policy, card numbers, your ticket details, and any emergency contact information that you might need (including doctors, family members, and travel agent). Email these documents and this information to yourself, and also forward it to your family and friends.
6. Stock up your camera
Pack extra batteries; you don’t want your batteries to die on you when you’re just about to arrive at the Great Wall of China or Yosemite National Park. Remember you might not always have access to an outlet and pack extra memory cards as well, so you can snap photos to your heart’s content.

The summer may be over but that doesnt mean you cant plan ahead and book a family holiday in Ireland for 2013. For many the thoughts of travelling overseas can seem like more hassle than its worth. Trying to keep an eye on everyone while navigating through an airport maze, dealing with popping ears, and making sure everyone stays together when waiting tirelessly for luggage to arrive is not the ideal way to begin a holiday. But what if there is an easy solution? By taking one of the many ferries to Ireland you can avoid airport stress and begin your holiday in style. Here are some of the main reasons travelling by ferry is better for your family holiday:
1 – Instead of trying to keep children entertained in a cramped airplane seat, why not let them enjoy an amusement arcade on one of the ferries to Ireland . Not only will this help release a lot of pent up energy (i.e. tire them out so you can relax for a while!) but playing games with your family is a great way to bond. There are usually games for all ages so have fun and let your competitive streak come out!
2 – Those with older children or teenagers have probably tried to pry some sort of electronic device out of their hands at some stage this year alone! Travelling on one of the ferries to Ireland means that you wont have to argue with your tech-savvy children about turning off their phones or putting their iPads on airplane mode. Your kids will love you even more when you tell them about the free Wi-Fi that is on-board most ships! Airplane food is not only unappetising and tasteless but also quite expensive. Although packing food for your journey is an option, its your holiday so you should make the most of it. Whether you would like a small bite to eat or a more substantial meal, ferries to Ireland have lots of restaurants and lounges to choose from. From soups and sandwiches to tasty traditional Irish meals there is something to suit all appetites.
3 – Shorter flights rarely include TVs or the option to watch movies. Ferries, on the other hand, often have TV lounges that you can sit and relax in while waiting to arrive at your holiday destination.
So travel by ferry for your 2013 family holiday to ensure a stress-free and happy start!
